Suspicious Phone Call
(Collingwood, ON.) Officers from the Collingwood/The Blue Mountains detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police were alerted to a suspicious phone call received by an area resident this week, suspected of being an attempted fraud.
The complainant received a call from a male, who identified himself as an employee of Bell Communications, advising that she had won a free alarm system for her residence. The male caller informed the complainant that to proceed with the installation, and to verify her identity, she would have to provide him with a credit card. A small charge would be applied to the card but would be refunded in her next phone bill. Thankfully the complainant did not provide the caller with the requested info and instead called police.
Further investigation revealed that Bell Canada does not have this type of promotion and as such, the caller was certainly attempting to defraud the complainant. A media release is being sent out because the male caller told the complainant that he was planning on calling other residents of Collingwood and area with the same offer.
As such police are warning residents if they receive such a call not to disclose their financial information.
